Is a chess gift given from birth?
Nobody is born with special skills. Some of us have a certain potential from birth, but until it turns into ability, we may not even guess about its existence. The great world champion Emmanuel Lasker said that any person with intelligence, with the right training, becomes a chess master.
So the correct answer is this: you probably have the potential of being a very strong chess player from birth - a force that even titled players like myself have to reckon with.
An important difference between this solver and other similar books or books on tactics is that the solution of specially selected problems combines the study of vital knowledge with the training of precisely those skills and abilities that will help to apply it in practice.
By following the process that we use in our project, you will naturally come to how to develop your skills. One that is especially valuable is a clear understanding of positions in the mind. We call this skill visualization. It is very important in accurate analysis, where you work out important options by imagining the sequence of moves in your mind and predicting in advance where the position will come.
There is another vital skill - this is the study of the elements of position, and then understanding (some chess players call this “sense of position“) what move or plan is appropriate here, without resorting to counting many options - or not counting at all. The presence of highly developed intuition helps great masters to create masterpieces of chess art even in blitz games. Such intuitive abilities are often compared to inspiration, and sometimes mistakenly regarded only as a gift from God.
To train your intuition, give yourself one to two minutes per position. At the very beginning, you may be able to solve correctly only one or two positions out of eight, while being confident that you are right and seeing the reasons for this.
However, to train your analytical skills, you must set yourself up for a much longer period of time - for example, 20 minutes per position. Imagine that you are in a critical situation in a tournament game where you need to be very careful when counting. In a competitive environment, you have to check variations over and over again, and you need to be sure that you correctly rank the positions at the end of each variation.
In terms of training analytical skills, your score should be at least 75%. Check and recheck!
A combination of intuition and analysis to study the same position.
Try combining the two approaches at once. Choose a position to study. Within a minute or two, use your intuition and write down the moves you chose. Do a comprehensive analysis in about 20 minutes without moving the pieces on the board. When you’re finished, write down your options. You can work with diagrams, or you can arrange the figures on the board. (Many chess players rightly prefer to spend time placing pieces on the board, which brings practice closer to the conditions of a real competition.) Take care to clearly imagine the end of each variation. And then move the pieces as in a delayed game to refine and deepen your analysis.
Probable sequence of actions for the intuitive-analytical exercise:
* We study the position for about two minutes, using intuition;
* We analyze options up to 20 minutes (very difficult positions require even longer);
* Place the position on the board and move the pieces to check the analysis.
Training with a set of positions
Items can be grouped in several ways. One of the two most effective ones that I use with my students was developed by the famous trainer, international master Mark Dvoretsky for his students - candidates for grandmasters.
Butler training method. He puts the pupils 20 minutes on the clock, then gives four positions to solve - one of them is required to be solved at one time. As you do the exercise, you have to balance your desire to carefully check the analysis with the need to make a decision in time. At the end of the day, you will have to deal with all four positions under a time constraint. In a “real“ game, if you move too fast, without prior deep thought, there is a risk of making a “safe“, but not the best move
