‘Supercell thunderstorm’ touches down as travel misery continues
A “localised tornado” caused significant damage to homes in Greater Manchester overnight.
The Met Office describes the weather phenomenon as occurring when a thunderstorm is fed lots of warm, humid air and begins to rotate.
“Tornadoes usually form from big thunderstorms called supercells,” the forecaster has said as it warned of heavy rain, hail, frequent lightning and gusty winds.
