Apophis, named after the ancient Egyptian god of chaos, is a near-Earth asteroid approximately 370 meters in diameter. Discovered in 2004, it initially garnered significant attention due to early calculations suggesting a small possibility it could impact Earth in 2029. However, further observations and analyses have since ruled out the 2029 impact scenario, providing reassurance about Earth’s safety from Apophis for the foreseeable future. Despite this, the asteroid’s close approach in 2029 will provide a unique opportunity for scientists to study a near-Earth object (NEO) of this size up close, offering valuable insights into the nature of asteroids and enhancing our understanding of how to mitigate potential asteroid threats in the future.
