Brahma arpañam Brahma Havihi
Brahma agnau Brahmañ āhutaṃ
Brahmaiva Tena Gantavyam
Brahmakarma Samādhinaa
(Bhagavad Gita, Chapter IV, Verse 24)
Brahman is the act of offering (arpanam), Brahman is the material offered (havis – food), Brahman is the sacrificial fire (agni – digestive power), Brahman is the one who has been invoked (ahutam), Brahman indeed is the destination (gantavyam), Brahman is the performer who is absorbed in the contemplation (karma samadhina).
Aham Vaishvānaro Bhutvā
Prāñinām Ḍeham āshritaha
Prāña apāna Samāyuktaha
Pachāmi annam Chaturvidham
(Bhagavad Gita, Chapter XV, Verse 14)
I (Aham), abides (ashritaha) in the body (deham) of living beings (Praninaam) as the warmth of life, the Metabolic Fire (Vaiswanara), and associated with (samaayuktha) the physiological functions of perception (Praana) and excretion (Apaana), digest (pachaami) the four types (chatur vidham) of food (annam).
The first verse reveals us the greatest principle of “Advaita”- everything is Brahman – the Consciousness – God.
The very act of taking food is equated to performing a “yajna” – act of offering to God – into a sacrificial fire.
The second verse reminds us the presence of God in every aspect of our life.
By contemplating these verses, before taking each meal, will help us to get established in the ultimate truth. It will help us to realize that we are not separate from God, we are part of the Supreme Consciousness, and that we are all connected.
