Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on House Speaker election, India-Canada tensions – Oct. 3, 2023

Pierre Poilievre speaks with reporters on Parliament Hill as the House of Commons elects a new Speaker following the resignation of Anthony Rota. The Conservative leader faces questions about reports that India has told Canada to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country. The move comes following Canada’s recent allegations of a possible link between the Indian government and the June 2023 killing of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Poilievre is also asked about Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s intent to use the notwithstanding clause to override a judge’s ruling that pauses the government’s school pronoun policy. The policy, which was introduced on August 22, 2023, requires parental consent for students under 16 who want to change their names or pronouns in schools. (October 3, 2023)
