Neoliberalism in South America & Struggles Against Salmon Farming Maria Laura Borla & Constanza Po
NOTE* When the speakers mention NGOs, they are referring to what we would call in the US grassroots orgs.
Constanza Portus (Puerto Williams, Chile): Dentist by profession, has worked in sustainable tourism, believing it can be a way that allows social development and valorization of local culture while respecting and preserving the environment of which we are part of. Also she has been actively part of social organizations as “Territorio Yagan sin Salmoneras”, an interethnic organization that defends the local culture and environment of the Cape Horn and Beagle Channel from salmon farming. Facing the threat of salmon farming installation to the Beagle Channel in 2019, she also worked together with Argentinian neighbors from Ushuaia to avoid this industry to expand in this pristine and amazing territory.
Maria Laura Borla (Ushuaia, Argentina): is a naturalist who has spent the last thirty eight years living and working in Ushuaia, facing the Beagle Channel. Her major interest has been the development of sustainable tourism practices in Tierra del Fuego, an area in which she made several important contributions in different specialized journals. Currently she is an environmental activist since she understood that all forms of life are subject to what we all can do together to avoid more damage to our planet.
