Dmitry Borodaev – Arabesques
==
Dmitry Borodaev, guitar, and Elizaveta Shabalina, organ, performing Dmitry Borodaev’s piece ’Arabesques’.
Dmitry Borodaev (b. 1985) is an Artistic Director of the ’Guitar Times’ Competition and Festival. He is a member of the Moscow Union of Composers, award-winner of many international guitarists’ and composers’ competitions.
’Arabesques’ is a suite for guitar and organ. It is one of the rare original works for this instrumental composition which was written specifically for the Russian Organ Competition; it was awarded with the first prize. The improvisational manner of the first part conveys the flavor of the Moorish patterns – arabesques – due to the intonational and harmonic basis. Music conveys a meditatively contemplative character. The piece follows with the fugato which was written in the traditions of organ masters of the 17th-18th centuries, however, it has a special Arabic-flavoured intonation and metric base. The final part of the suite is a virtuoso toccata full of rhythmic beats, ornamentation and ’colors’ of oriental instruments.
’Arabesques’ is a combination of traditional Western European musical forms and intonations with the ornamentation of the Eastern world.
