Here we focus on some basics and the transition from closed guard to a more dynamic open guard. While there are many great things to do from the closed guard, we tend to find more offensive setups when our legs are free to move, control the inside position and post or push on hips, shoulders or arms. This makes the open guard a desirable place to be when it comes to submission attacks. The big problem is in the TRANSITION FROM CLOSED GUARD TO OPEN. Most people lose control as they release their closed guard, and by the time they get to an open position their partner is out of range or has closed the distance. The key to transitioning from closed guard to open guard is to maintain contact through the process. Here we look at one good way - the scissor guard - so you can improve your chances of controlling your partner and landing your submissions.
