Mandolin Mondays #121: This week on Mandolin Mondays we have a very special video from bandolimist Elisa Meyer Ferreira from the band Choro Das 3. Hear her play this jaw-dropping original tune!
Elisa is one of the premier bandolimist from Brazil. She plays fulltime with her family in the internationally acclaimed band Choro Das 3. Together they have a host of incredible recorded work, including their most recent release, Impressions. Check it out here:
Here Elisa gives us some insight on the original music in this video, “This is a piece I composed last year called “Nobre Coração “ (noble heart), and this is a style of music called Chamamé, which is played in south of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. I dedicated this composition to my grandfather Rubens, who I didn’t have the chance to meet unfortunately, but as I always heard beautiful things about him and knew that he loved going to south of Brazil and Uruguay, I thought a Chamamé would be perfect for him. The original arrangement is for mandolin, 7th string guitar, flute, melódica and pandeiro.
The bandolim I play in the video was specially built for me by the Brazilian luthier Manoel Andrade. He built it with a wider body than the traditional Bandolim, to achieve a similar sound to the Portuguese guitar, with lots of sustain. The back is made of Jacaranda da Bahia (Rosewood from Bahia) which was with the luthier for many years, therefore it’s a very old tree.“

And as always, tune in next week for more Mandolin Mondays! Until then...
Happy Picking!
