There has been a lot of talk recently about “8D” music and audio. I want to offer some insight because I want people to be informed, enjoy music and not get swept away by hyped terms. In music production we typically have two audio signals (left and right) like headphones because we have two ears. This allows us to place elements anywhere from left to right to give music sonic width and enhance the quality of the music. What has become “8D audio” is actually called 3D audio and has existed for quite some time. I’ve seen 4D used and not sure what happened to 5, 6 and 7 or why someone decided to jump to 8. The three dimensions are left/right, up/down, front/behind (ie. the three dimensions in which we all exist). Using a number of techniques and different types of audio FX/software, the other two dimensions can be simulated, essentially tricking your ears into thinking that your left/right headphones are actually a surround sound experience.
