1926: Austin Wylie’s Golden Pheasant Orch. - Could I? I Certainly Could
Austin Wylie’s Golden Pheasant Orchestra – Could I? I Certainly Could, Fox-Trot (Charleston) (Yellen-Ager) with Vocal chorus, Vocalion 1926 (USA)
NOTE: Austin James WYLIE (born 1893 in Cleveland, Ohio – died 1947 in Parma, Ohio) – American dance bandleader, who in the 1920s and 1930s led a dance band based in Cleveland, Ohio. It operated as a territory band, though it also broadcast on national radio. While the band was engaged at the famous Golden Pheasant Restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio (1925-1926), it billed itself as Austin Wylie’s Golden Pheasant Orchestra. The Golden Pheasant served American and Chinese food and had a large dance floor. They provided a dance band throughout the day from noon till 2:30 and evening from till closing around 10:00 pm. A number of noted jazz musicians played in Wylie’s orchestra, including Tony Pastor, Vaughn Monroe, Claude Tornhill or Artie Shaw. Shaw also served as arranger and later in the 1930s, as director of the group and Wylie acted as his manager.
