Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is one of five conditions within the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), of which it is the most severe. All FASD conditions are due to prenatal exposure to alcohol (due to maternal consumption of ethanol or alcohol during pregnancy). In this lesson, we discuss the factor of alcohol in the pathophysiology of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, including risk factors associated with alcohol consumption, the signs and symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (facial morphology, brain abnormalities and skeletal abnormalities), how Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is diagnosis and how it is treated.
