Swiss pianist Albert Ferber’s marvellous recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No.1, from a Rare Recorded Editions LP from the 1970s.
The Swiss pianist recorded the complete Debussy piano music in the 1950s and also recorded the complete Fauré, but he is scarcely remembered today.
This terrific performance finds the pianist playing with a gorgeous singing sonority, burnished lines, impressive dynamic control, and natural timing. His chords are beautifully voiced, enriching Rachmaninoff’s unique musical idiom with tremendous clarity (the sound is never overbearing, his tone always clear). Glorious playing by a truly underrated artist.
