Judy Henske “High Flying Bird“ (Elektra, 1963): Today’s NY Night Train Party Platter
If you assumed I’m not much one for sentimental melodramatic balladry, or most 60s folk music in general, you are correct! And I never heard a version of “High Flying Bird“ that I liked until I heard this one! So this pick is beyond my usual limits - and that makes me like it even more. And it wouldn’t be here if it didn’t grab me in a big way! Listen to the way the rhythm pushes and the band grooves! Check out those classy muscular bluesy guitar runs that almost become eastern! Hear “the Queen of the Beatniks“ wails all over, under, and around this dirge. And everything is recorded and mixed with the clarity of a folk record but with a lot more punch. I’ll take anything from any genre that possesses this much power! A rare case when over-the-top melodrama is doing its job on me! Do you also feel it?
