Exclusive: Pete ’Padre’ Lazonby - Beautiful Lies No stranger to sumptuous electronic vibes, Pete Lazonby dons his Padre hat for the 31st release on RAWAX, a label which continues to push forward from strength to strength. The Beautiful Lies EP brings to the fore a quadruple-headed trip-vibe for the DJs of the world. For the A-side, we’re given two superb originals in the name of Beautiful Lies and Spellcasting, two cuts of absolute class in every way. The title track is a heady mixture of softly crisp hats, neatly placed FX sounds and light, yet punchy, percussion. The synths weave in and around the bass and drums, ethereal in their warmth and space-like flow. A good word to describe the sound would be ’woozy’, as there’s a real hazy-headed feeling to the vibe here. Following on is the aforementioned Spellcasting, sticking with a similarly spaced-out theme, but this time utilising more of a minimal approach, as the track takes several minutes to build from its synth-led start, the layers of drums, tinkling riffs, additional fuzzy synths and low-buzzing FX sounds all gradually settling down in their rightful place, within the sound spectrum. As electronic music goes, you’ll have to go some way to create something as gorgeous as this, it’s perfect warm-up or ending-set music, but that you can also listen to as a standalone piece of beautiful music. The B-side takes the two A-side tracks and gives each one of them a Beat Mix; what this essentially means is you get slightly more stripped-back versions of both cuts, which are in reference to, but add excellent bonuses to, the originals themselves. Not DJ tools as such, each version just takes some of the elements out, or they are simply rearranged, both working wonderfully. The Beat Mix of Spellcasting is a quite exquisite example of how to make something have a real impact, but in a quiet and understated manner, again a showcase of absolute skill to close this excellent release.
