🌋 What Just Happened at Yellowstone National Park, July 23, 2024
Yellowstone’s LATEST SHOCKING EXPLOSION.
A dramatic event occurred at Yellowstone National Park on July 23rd around 10:19 AM. A hydrothermal explosion rocked the Biscuit Basin area near Old Faithful, sending debris flying and causing significant damage to boardwalks in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The explosion was captured on video by several visitors, showcasing the immense force of nature at work. A hydrothermal explosion occurs when superheated water trapped beneath the ground suddenly flashes to steam, causing a violent release of energy.
Yellowstone is home to one of the most active hydrothermal systems in the world, with the intense heat from the magma chamber below heating water and creating steam and pressure. When the pressure becomes too great, it can lead to an explosive release, as we saw today.
This is not an unprecedented event, as hydrothermal explosions are not uncommon in Yellowstone. In fact, similar events have occurred in the past, including an explosion at Porkchop Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin in 1989 and another in Biscuit Basin in 2009.
Park officials and USGS scientists are closely monitoring the area to ensure safety and gather more data on this event. While hydrothermal explosions are dramatic, they do not indicate an imminent volcanic eruption. The volcanic system remains at normal background levels of activity.
Visitors to the park are advised to stay safe and be aware of their surroundings. Remember to follow all park rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
