STORYLINE
Rabbi Yitzhak Kadouri, a revered mystic who cursed Saddam Hussein, criticised the pop star Madonna and influenced Israeli elections, was buried on Sunday in Jerusalem’s Givat Shaul cemetery.
He was believed to be about 106 years old.
About 200,000 people took part in Kadouri’s funeral; a procession through the streets of Jerusalem followed by a ceremony at the cemetery.
Kadouri, a leader of the Kabbalah school of Jewish mystical thought, died on Saturday after his liver failed during an operation.
He was politically influential and vocal in his opposition to several world figures.
In 1998, he pronounced a curse on former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, willing him to be removed from power.
Kadouri also criticised the pop star Madonna, who has taken up Kabbalah, saying non-Jews should not practice the religion.
