Mongolian yurts that symbolise a centuries-old nomadic life are disappearing from the nation’s capital as it undergoes a rapid construction boom. One city councillor has estimated that every 700 square metre plot of land once owned by families in his Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar has been converted into 15-storey blocks of flats. A lack of planning for public infrastructure such as pavements, playgrounds and parking spaces has many people worried about the quality of life they and their children will have if development remains unchecked.
