Gourdon 🇫🇷 Inside the Stunning Medieval Village With an Amazing View | Côte d’Azur 4K Walk

Gourdon is one of the most beautiful villages in France, located 12 kilometers northeast of Grasse in the Maritime Alps. As you approach Gourdon on the south road, and the road climbs ever higher into the rocky, wooded valley, you can’t help but be impressed by your first view of the village. Known as “the Eagle’s Nest“, Gourdon overlooks the Loup Gorges and the French Riviera. A medieval fortified village whose history goes back to the 9th century when the counts of Provence organized their border to isolate themselves from the county of Ventimiglia. Gourdon is perched atop a rocky promontory at an altitude of 760 meters, from which it has magnificent views over the Loup River valley and beyond to the Mediterranean, from Nice to Théoule. There is a viewpoint at the end of the village from which the views are spectacular. It is also known as the ’eagles nest’ because of this exalted position. The village itself is inevitably very attractive, beautifully restored, and with medieval streets lined with beautiful old houses, and craft and perfume stores. Next to the castle, you will also be charmed by the beautiful stone houses present in the whole village as well as by the streets and alleys with craft stores that propose perfumed waters, soaps, honey, nougat, gingerbread - as well as jewels and decorative objects in glass. Several religious buildings are present, including a Romanesque church built between the 10th and 12th centuries, the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Pons, and the Saint-Vincent chapel. More than 500 meters below, near the Gorges du Loup, lies the hamlet of Pont du Loup. You will notice their huge pillars which are the remains of a viaduct destroyed in 1944.
