Aradhya placida, a new genus and new species of freshwater crab from the Western Ghats of India
Aradhya placida is a new genus and new species of freshwater crab from the Central Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. This species belongs to the family Gecarcinucidae.
The species is commonly known as “Peaceful Crab” and “Shantiyuta Edi” (ಶಾಂತಿಯುತ ಏಡಿ) in Kannada since these crabs are non-aggressive and quite calm or peaceful.
These crabs are found in 30 to 60 cm deep burrows close to the base of large trees and boulders. This species seems to be semiterrestrial and primarily nocturnal. They are mostly active during monsoon season.
