The film dates to the 1960s. The film shows large farms in Illinois (2:00) and other American states, which are the largest producers of soyabeans per acre in the world. At 2:37, an Allis Chalmers tractor turns over soil in a field in Kane County, Illinois. At 3:20, farmers plant soybean seeds. At 3:42, beans are treated with a bacteria culture before being planted. At 4:27, herbicide or pesticide is poured into drums of water on the tractor, to discourage weed growth. At 5:29, a rotary hoe is pulled across the field by a John Deere tractor, to break up the soil crust. At 5:50, the first shoots appear in the field. At 6:30, bean pods begin to appear in the field, and the narrator discusses the role of nitrogen in the growth of the plant. At 7:20, a test farm is shown in Illinois, where special hybrid plants are grown including taller varieties. At 7:52, a plant breeder is shown at work, attempting an experiment to increase plant yields. At 8:45, autumn is shown with the beans brown and dry -- the time for harvest has arrived. At 9:20, combines drive through the fields collecting the beans. At 9:43, the farmer’s wife appears with cold drinks and food, and then the harvest continues. At 10:00, beans rich in oil -- up to 20% of their total weight -- are shown being collected. At 10:35, grain silos are shown including that belonging to the Savoy Grain Co. in Tolono, Illinois. At 11:00, the narrator discusses how grain is shipped by the railroads and via the Mississippi River to destinations all over the world. The soybean, soy bean, or soya bean is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean, which has numerous uses. Traditional unfermented food uses of soybeans include soy milk, from which tofu and tofu skin are made.
