Golubac, Serbia - Golubac Fortress

Golubac (Голубац) is a small town in eastern Serbia that sits on the right bank of the Danube at its widest point, just before it flows into the Djerdap gorge (eng. The Iron Gates of the Danube). The Iron Gate park is popular for outdoor activities like hunting, hiking, camping and fishing. Golubac is best-known among tourists for the nearby located Roman archaeological sites, the Iron Gates (part of Derdap National Park), and Golubac Fortress. The Golubac beach is located at the entrance to this town. The beach is clean, covered with sand and set with umbrellas, thus creating a very pleasant environment. In addition to enjoyment in nature, you can indulge in enjoyment of food, in the specialties of Golubac restaurants, which offer, above all, local traditional cuisine and fish specialties. Golubac fortress is one of the best preserved fortified medieval towns in Serbia that is believed to have been built in the late-14th century AD. In historical sources, Golubac is mentioned for the first time in 1335. As a cultural property of exceptional importance, Golubac Fortress also belongs to the Golubac Nature Reserve, the area surrounding the entrance into the Iron Gate gorge that at the same time represents the entry point into Djerdap National Park. The fortress is located approx 4 km (2,5 mi) down the river from Golubac and was built in the late-14th century AD. At the castle location, the river has a width of 6,5 km (4 mi). During its history, the Golubac Fortress has repelled 120 sieges and attacks. It was built as the last frontier and defense, and the view from it of Danube and Djerdap - The Iron Gates is a unique experience. Golubac fortress has ten towers. The first and the true builder of this fortress gave it nine towers set in front, back and lower town, but Turks added another tower and strengthened the fortress with canon openings. All towers are built in a shape of a square except the donjon tower that has a polygonal base, and the cylindrical top, thus the name “Hat Tower“. The Danube River and certain parts of the Djerdap Gorge are a real gem of this area, which is very rich in diverse and quality fish. The whole region is widely known for hunting and fishing, so that these two activities have become a symbol of Golubac and its surroundings. The rich and long history of the town of Golubac, as well as its medieval fortress are a large and indispensable part of its cultural and historical heritage and significance.
