Under the impetus of her husband, Walter Legge, the greatest artistic director in the history of the record, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf recorded at the dawn of the microgroove the first version of Strauss’s Four Last Song under the direction of Otto Ackermann. While the engraving she later remade with Georg Szell places greater emphasis on the setting sun illuminating a dying world, the first version is imbued with a vocal freshness, a flayed sensitivity; every word, every syllable, every bend in the phrase, every bend in the song having reached perfection, absolute perfection.
It is as if she whispers these words, these phrases, for herself. We must follow this voice second by second, its intimate pulse, this moving confession that passes through it - confession of everything that embraces life, sadness, distress, love, and time, labile time, flowing time, until its disappearance, the voice accompanying it one last time - until evaporation.
The last song of a Strauss contemplating death that comes with an astonishing serenity, these Four Last Lieders, composed at the age of eighty-four, are his most disturbing and ecstatic pages. The last verse of the last Lieder is like a holiday given to life: “Ist dies etwa der Tod?“ (Is this death?)
The voice blends imperceptibly into the shroud of the orchestra, which echoes the symphonic poem Death and Transfiguration, written sixty years earlier, and rises to the body, to the face, erasing it...
