Visit Visit our website Dating to the late 1960s, these TV commercials for Salem Menthol Cigarettes asks viewers to imagine that the “country“ branded cigarette produces a “springtime“ feeling. The second ad features the tagline as a jingle: “You can take a Salem out of the country but you can’t take the country out of Salem“ with the added line “Take a puff, it’s springtime.“ These were the brand’s original taglines following its introduction in 1956 by R.J. Reynolds; today the brand is owned by Imperial Tobacco Group. Salem’s name (and of course the Winston brand itself) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the founding city of R.J. Reynolds.
