In this video, watch a performance of Pietro Antonio Locatelli’s Sinfonia Funebre, as performed by Tafelmusik.
Pietro Antonio Locatelli was an Italian Baroque composer and violinist. In the opening Lament of his Sinfonia funebre, moments of grief and despair are heard in the sustained arcing lines of the violins and violas, soaring over the immutable rhythm of the double bass, which seems to represent the inexorability of fate. The succeeding movements alternate passages of great struggle with interludes of lightness, leading ultimately to consolation.
