Mitral Regurgitation (MR) - Heart Auscultation - Episode 4

For all 12 Heart Auscultation Sounds, visit the AMBOSS Cardiovascular Learning Card: Mitral regurgitation is a valvular heart disease characterized by the failure of the mitral valve to completely close at the end of diastole, causing a retrograde flow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium during systole. This results in a pansystolic murmur that is best heard with the diaphragm of the stethoscope at the cardiac apex. The murmur does not radiate to the carotid arteries but may radiate to the the carotid pulse while auscultating the heart to relate the auscultatory findings to the cardiac cycle. The heart sounds and murmurs have been amplified for demonstration purposes.
