Great Court at the British Museum
London, UK 1994 – 2000
The courtyard at the centre of the British Museum was one of London’s long-lost spaces. The departure of the British Library was the catalyst for recapturing the courtyard as a new public focus. At its heart is the magnificent Reading Room, which for the first time in its history is open to all. The glazed canopy consists of 6,000 individual steel members that are attached to each other by 1,800 connecting nodes. It has been built to an accuracy of plus or minus 3mm. The Court also forms a pedestrian link between the British Library to the river.
