Haiku Salut in Edale - Be Kinder cultural trespass
On Saturday 7th September 2019 we went to a little chapel near Edale, Derbyshire and experimented with some new ideas. You can hear an edit of something that came together here. We used the chapel harmonium but we had to remove the recording of it as the machine was very beautiful but in tune only with itself.
We spent the day writing and performing here as part of the Be Kinder project, a cultural trespass curated by Jarvis Cocker and Jeremy Deller. A celebration of the mass trespass of 1932 where hundreds of ramblers (mainly industrial workers from the cities) staged a protest and subsequently changed the law. That law now allows all of us to enjoy our countryside not just the small few who own land and people who like hunting. Being here and taking part in this cultural trespass was a big reminder that protests do and can change things. It’s easy to feel despair but you might never know the effect you have. This was a lovely day with hope around the edges.
Big thank yous to Jarvis Cocker for asking us to be a part of it. You have until Sunday if you want to do the trail.
