Performance assessment, unlike objective test results which may only demonstrate basic recall of a subject, can provide teachers information about how well students understand the information they’ve been asked to learn. Performance assessment includes authentic tasks such as activities, exercises, or problems that require students to apply their knowledge to a particular situation. In this example of differentiated instruction, the teacher uses preassessment and performance strategies during a lesson on prepositions in order to better judge how well her students are grasping the subject.
