The city of Mysore has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival. Dasara can be described as a 10-day festival in South India, culminating on Vijayadashami. Dasara celebrations commence with a pooja performed to Goddess Chamundeshwari Temple atop the Chamundi Hills with the presence of the Wodeyar royal couple, and state officials. The Mysore palace is one of the most glorious and lauded pieces of architecture in India. During the Dasara, Mysore palace is illuminated for two hours from 07:00 pm to 09:00 pm on the first eight days and for three hours from 07:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Vijayadashami day with 97,000 incandescent lamps that amplify its majesty and beauty. The sight of the palace is in itself worth it to make a visit to Mysore. The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) is set to spend more than Rs. 5 crore on the illumination as the Government has already announced that it will be a grand Dasara after two years of subdued celebrations. This year, 124 km of roads and streets and 96 junctions will be specially illuminated with LED bulbs. Last year, the illumination was done on 110 km of roads and 89 circles. The illumination had brought tourists from far and wide and this one move had spurred tourist arrivals and the hospitality industry too saw a big boost in occupancy rates.
