Kate Winslet’s new film Ammonite is about real-life unsung heroine Mary Anning, a legendary palaeontologist whose work was re-appropriated by her male peers and passed off as their own. But, the thing that has caused the most discussion and attention is not Anning’s work, the sexism of the era, nor even Winslet’s strong performance, but the fact that director Francis Lee decided to give her a lesbian love story. “If Francis had given Mary Anning a husband, no one would have said a ******* word,“ Kate Winslet told us. “That’s the **** that has to change. It makes me quite cross actually.“ The actress, who has been working on screen for nearly two thirds of her life, says she hopes that her work on Ammonite offers a “helpful contribution“ in bringing LGBTQ stories to the mainstream. She says that the more of these narratives that exist, the more they’ll become normalised. “There needs to be more LGBTQ films so that we don’t feel the c
