Although this place is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is sadly mostly abandoned now. As people settled across Iceland, there was a need to help them cross the challenging glacier that separated the east and west of the island. The family who settled here in the 19th century became experts at navigating the challenging terrain, and their skills were crucial for anyone wanting to cross the glacial river. For about 200 years, generations of this family skillfully transported travelers and earned a living. The last ones to do this were two brothers born in 1907 and 1910.
