Heavy floods hit Northern Japan on August 4th 2022. Half a million residents were ordered to evacuate, as heavy rain caused widespread floods. Rivers burst their banks, flooding settlements in low lying areas. Homes and businesses were flooded, destroying possessions and produce. Floodwaters covered farmland, raising fear of food shortages in the region. Roads and train lines were blocked in area, stopping travel and isolating residents. Roads were destroyed as they collapsed, with landslides causing further damage. Power outages were reported, with electricity supplies affected. The areas worst affected were the Niigata, Ishikawa and Yamagata prefectures.
