VIDEO | Arizona Train Derailment: Train carrying corn syrup derails in Arizona

A freight train that derailed in Arizona Wednesday night was initially feared to be carrying hazardous materials, but was only hauling corn syrup, according to rail operator BNSF. Photos and videos shared by Chris Higa show emergency vehicles gathered at the site of the derailment near Topock, in Mohave County, near the border with California, Wednesday night. The halted freight train can be seen on the tracks in the distance. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office initially reported the possibility that the train was carrying hazardous materials, but did not report any spillage. BNSF later confirmed the train was carrying corn syrup, per reports. In a statement late Wednesday, BNSF said the derailment “affected the main track” and there was no estimate for when it would be reopened. The area was under a tornado warning and flash flood warning earlier in the evening, according to the National Weather Service. The National Transportation Safety Board was called in to investigate.
