Heian Shodan Bunkai 1-4: Tips and Common Mistakes

This bunkai for the opening movements of Heian/Pinan Shodan is the work of Iain Abernethy. It is currently used in my curriculum for students testing for 8th kyu. The first gedan berai (“low block“) is used to off-balance the enemy while getting an outside angle. The oi zuki (stepping punch“ is then used. Punch AS you step. The chamber of the next gedan berai is used to get a chin pick. Then, step back and throw the enemy’s face to the ground much like the movement in the kata. Finish with hammer fist punch.
