In almost every part of the world, the need to keep ourselves and others safe from Covid-19, has been prioritised over every other aspect of our lives. What is the cost of living day to day with fear of safety? Is it really possible to diminish risk at no cost? Or is there a fundamental trade-off between safety and core human values, such as freedom?

Professor Frank Furedi, author and social commentator, is an emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury, Senior Research Fellow at XXIst Century Institute, Budapest.
Since the late 1990s, Frank has been widely cited about his views on why Western societies find it so difficult to engage with risk and uncertainty. He is the author of more than 25 books, exploring the cultural developments in western societies that have led to risk averseness.
