In Miami, Florida there are numerous groups of Cubans - some fled from Castro’s regime and some from Batista’s - but they are all opposed to the present policies of Fidel Castro, and plotting to bring about a country-revolution. One of the leaders is a man named Diego, formerly a Castro official. He has been taking part in the guerilla fighting in Las Villas province, in the mountainous country, in the middle of Cuba, which is a long, narrow island stretching over 600 miles from east to west. Castro admits the presence of the guerilla forces and says large units of his own men are needed to suppress them. Diego has been living in an encampment near Miami, and his men have been having anti-tetanus injections, presumably in preparation for the tough life as guerrillas in the Cuban sierras. Film just received from America shows one of the shipments of arms and supplies which are made from Florida to Cuba - in this case the anti-Castro gun-runners had been prevented by United States customs from making the journey at an attempt a week earlier. Three motor launches set out from Florida, and one of their staging points was the large island of Andros, on the southward route to Cuban’s northern coast. Later, another stop, this time at Cayo Verde rebel base, off the Las Villas coast, and there the rebels test out the 20 mm. cannon and other weapons before landing them at dusk in Cuba. Also, more supplies are picked up. These are dropped to the rebels by air. With short-wave radio, the party keeps in touch with its men in the hills on the mainland. Finally, a successful nightfall landing in Cuba, and the arms are hurriedly rushed inland. The various rebel groups, some of them containing former Cuban Government ministers are said to be concentrating on building up forces within Cuba rather than trying to create a force to make full-scale landings. Estimates on the number of Cuban exiles in and around Miami vary between five and twenty-five thousand. Rebels inside Cuba, in Las Villas province, are estimated to number nearly one thousand. An unconfirmed report says the leader Diego is aiming to set up a rebel provisional government in Cuba.
