ROGER DALTREY Free Me

I don’t think i had heard this song in the 40 years since it was released! In going through our National chart for 1981 this week, I revisited ’Free Me’ by Roger Daltrey and what a little gem it was. A minor hit in Britain (#39), it was his last solo recording to make the charts there. Lifted from his 4th album ’McVicar’ which was a soundtrack to the movie Daltrey played the title character, ’Free Me’ only managed to climb to #66 here in Australia and a tad better in America (#53). Daltrey would next mix up the mood with the beautiful ’Without Your Love’. But here, his powerful voice is well matched by the brilliance of Russ Ballard’s composition and Jeff Wayne’s production. A great postcard from 40 year ago.
