Bank error makes ATMs dispense free cash

Bank of Ireland customers were able to withdraw free money following a technical glitch, prompting massive queues and police guards at ATMs against withdrawals. The glitch allowed customers to withdraw more money than was in their accounts, or even withdraw money if they had no account. Some were able to transfer money out of their back accounts, yet still withdraw it. According to some, they were able to take over €1,000 ($1,092), double the normal daily withdrawal limit. Bank of Ireland blamed the blunder on a ‘technical issue,’ but warned customers that all transactions would eventually show on their account, even if it meant they would go overdrawn. ‘We urge any customer who may find themselves in financial difficulty due to overdrawing on their account to contact us,’ the bank said in a statement. After all, banks aren’t able to just create money out of nothing. They leave that to politicians.
