The British Pathé Archive Award honours outstanding archive and compilation film projects. High-quality archive footage is often invaluable for documentaries. The use of historical or commercial film excerpts on a larger scale, however, increases the required production budget substantially. With the Archive Award, British Pathé and aim at promoting projects utilising licensed material and thus strengthening this traditional documentary genre. Award winner 2020: QUEEN OF CHESS Jury Statement: QUEEN OF CHESS tells the unbelievable and largely forgotten story of Hungarian Judit Polgár who, as a young girl, was able to achieve fame in the male-dominated world of chess. Enriched by extensive archive material, it weaves an unlikely but true tale of power in all its complexity. Historic footage that draws us into the world of late-communist Hungary is interwoven with home movies from the Polgár family’s private archive as well as television reports of competitions with that era‘s Chess World Champions
