During the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Soviet Secret Police murdered thousands of (mostly) Ukrainian political prisoners in several prisons in Lviv before fleeing the city. Because a high percentage of the Soviet Secret Police were Jewish, the Nazis used the incident to stoke hatred towards the Jews in the Ukrainian populace.
