Work with Me Pine Needle Basket Vase {Real Time}

This long version of the pine needle basket vase that I coiled is in real-time. You will see the slow and careful process of winding, placing the needle, stitching, and tightening each and every stitch that went into this variegated basket. This is not intended to be a tutorial or a follow-along project as I don’t focus in on the details of what I’m doing. Rather this is an expression piece showing the time and effort handcrafted pieces demand of their makers. As a basket weaving teacher, I often hear the astonishment expressed by students amazed at the skill and effort they have to put in to create a basket or any other fiber craft piece. In a world filled with automation and machines, it’s easy to forget the value of an object and the resources necessary to create the things we use every day, or in this case, as creative decoration. I enjoy many modern conveniences. I enjoy the things that make life a bit easier. And in that, I try to incorporate a practice of awareness of the fact that someone or many people had a hand in making everything I use throughout the day. And that adds value and meaning to the object and reminds me to appreciate what I have and what I can give.
