The true backstory o the Crusades is of avarice and greed of the Church of Rome. There was never a goal to liberate Jerusalem. Both Christian Europeans and Muslims of the Middle East got played by the same people over a long period of time and in the end it was the Church that participated and grew rich from the intrigues.
