Tiger Shark Rules. Rules for swimming with sharks. #shark #sharks #nature #ocean #explore
How do we dive with so many sharks? Why don’t they attack us? Let’s take a look at the rules for shark diving which have allowed us to do this for decades
Shark diving is an exhilarating experience that demands respect, preparation, and constant vigilance. Here are five basic, critical rules every diver must follow when encountering these magnificent creatures.
Rule 1: Never Take Any Dive for Granted
Think you’re a pro? Think again. Every dive is a new game, with new players. Sharks don’t read rulebooks, and the ocean doesn’t care about your experience.
Every shark dive is unique, regardless of your experience level. Conditions change daily - shark behavior, currents, visibility, and environmental factors all vary. You must maintain constant situational awareness, treating each dive as if it’s your first. This is my number one rule for safety. Again – after nearly 20 years of doing this. Every dive for me is the first dive.
I believe that swimmers look at going into the ocean as too routine. When I go to the beach, I’m probably more nervous than when I’m diving with sharks.
Rule 2: Always Carry a Big Camera
A camera serves two purposes: documenting your encounters and providing a barrier between you and the shark. However, don’t let the lens become a permanent shield. Lowering your camera can lead to profound, unfiltered experiences with these ancient creatures. If you don’t want to use a camera – divers are taught how a PVC pipe can become a shark stick – a simple, vertical barrier between you and the shark. Cameras and shark sticks and a basic knowledge of shark behavior are fundamental to keeping us safe.
Rule 3: Proper Attire is Crucial
We wear black from head to toe when diving with sharks. This reduces the likelihood of attracting unwanted attention. Avoid high-contrast colors or exposed skin that might trigger a shark’s investigative instincts. A white patch of skin can look like bait. The best bet is a black low contrast wetsuit…. Your attire reflects professionalism and respect for these long-standing marine predators. I have a routine when I put on my wetsuit, booties, hood and gloves – and I never vary from what I wear – and I double check everything at least five times before I jump in the water.
Rule 4: Establish Eye Contact
When encountering a new shark it’s all about eye contact. This can potentially deter surprise approaches and communicates your awareness to the shark. However, remember that each interaction is unpredictable, and eye contact doesn’t guarantee specific behavior. b
Rule 5: Understand Your Environment and Team
Prior to any dive, thoroughly research the shark species you might encounter and their typical behaviors. Equally important is knowing your dive team’s experience and capabilities. Effective communication and mutual support are essential for safe shark diving. We work as a buddy team underwater. Helping each other look for sharks and keeping an eye on the creatures in the area.
By adhering to these rules, divers can maximize safety and fully appreciate the awe-inspiring experience of observing sharks in their natural habitat. Remember, respecting all sharks and their environment is paramount.
