1000 voice choir | David Lang’s ’Crowd Out’ in 3 minutes | Birmingham Contemporary Music Group

On Sunday 8 June 2014, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Music Director Simon Halsey, 20 Vocal Leaders and 1000 vocalists gave two spectacular world premiere performances of American composer David Lang’s new piece Crowd Out for 1000 voices in the enormous atrium of Millennium Point, Birmingham. This video uses footage from both of these performances to give a representation of what it was like to be involved in the world premiere of Crowd Out - one of the largest vocal events Birmingham has ever seen. Following the Birmingham premiere, Crowd Out was performed by home-grown communities in Berlin and London over the following weekends in June 2014. Birmingham Contemporary Music Group is one of the world’s foremost new music ensembles. Over three decades, BCMG has developed the music of today for the audiences of tomorrow. The ensemble has commissioned over 175 pieces of music from the world’s finest composers and emerging international talent. Many of the works have been commissioned through its innovative pioneering Sound Investment crowd-funding scheme to which over 500 donors have contributed more than £300,000; many of these works have subsequently found their way into worldwide repertoire.
