Green Grass Cloggers- music by Strictly Strings @ Appalachian State O-T Fiddlers Convention
(Click 2:43 for shortcut to Clogging) This was the individual “freestyle clogging“ exhibition by the Green Grass Cloggers with old time string band music by Strictly Strings from Boone, North Carolina. This was entertainment-only included in the Dance Competition hour at the end of the day.
This 2018 video from vafolklife is a must see:
I’d like to share this very informative comment recently (July 2018) posted by one of the Green Grass Cloggers (lady in red t-shirt) from Asheville, North Carolina. (jlw37663)

Just to provide a bit more info: Clogging/Flatfooting is considered a dance that was created in the Appalachian Mountains and was influenced by styles of the Native Americans, Africans, Irish, Scottish, and Brits. Originally, people danced without taps on wooden porches to create rhythms as musicians played old-time tunes.
Green Grass Cloggers formed in 1971 out of East Carolina University and have performed around the world throughout the years. We now have a team in Asheville, NC and Greenville, NC, and perform separately and together. Typically we wear colorful costumes and tap shoes. This video was an informal freestyle line which allows dancers to showcase their own styling and steps.
Several asked about the change in dancers that happened on stage - because this was an informal thing, we were getting organized while being introduced. Not sure why the one dancer didn’t return to the stage, but I promise that we all get along amazingly well!

If you are interested in lessons, I’d be happy to discuss possibilities. I’m wearing the red shirt. Here is my FB page:

“Strictly Strings“ band is Kathleen Burnett, Willow Dillon, Anissa Burnett, Caleb Coatney, and Cecil Gurganus (Watauga JAM instructor and mentor). All these folks are from Watauga County, North Carolina which is also the location of Appalachian State University.
See what happens when Appalachian traditional music and dance meets up with Indian traditional dance in the town of Los Angles, California- truly amazing and entertaining:
