Rainbow (Don Kirshner’s live show - New York, USA, Nov 11, 1978) - READ DESCRIPTION !!!
Rainbow (Don Kirshner’s live show - New York, USA, November 11, 1978)
- Long live rock ’n’ roll
- Gates of Babylon
NOTE: there should have been a 3rd song, L.A. Connection. During this air from November 11, 1978 only these 2 were showed/aired. I have seen L.A. Connection from may 1978 and is NOT the same as the promo-clip from the DVD “Live in Munchen 1977“ released in 2006 with bonus content of these 3 tracks as promo-clips from 1978. Please read all below and you will understand everything. Be clear that there are/were 3 versions of these 3 songs that were filmed in may 1978 and aired in october and november of the same year 1978. The essence of this is that Ronnie James Dio sings with real vocals while the rest of the band is following the video is re-edited and used for promo-clips. During the air of such editing ....it is obvious that they are not real-live recordings but just edits. It’s like if you were to watch the movie Blade Runner from it be a real time footage ? No. The problem (dilemma) with these video recordings is that we have time inconsistencies (because of their edits), and playbacks (demos) from both audio and video’s perspective it’s a need to follow the historical dates when they happened and will know.
***About the video and the audio tracks***
The band Rainbow used instrumental demos (sometimes called “rough mixes“) and Ronnie James Dio would go on and record his vocals on them.
And this is exactly what happened on Don Kirshner’s show.
For Don Kirshner’s show which was aired on October 6 and November 11 in 1978 (but recorded and filmed initially with Rainbow band using playback and Ronnie James Dio using real vocals in May of 1978) there were 3 songs that were captured and later remastered as audio tracks:
1) Long live rock ’n’ roll
2) L.A. connection
3) Gates of Babylon
NOTE: its possible that Ritchie Blackmore and other people might have the audio of these tracks as “instrumental versions or demos“ and without Ronnie James Dio’s vocals, exactly as they were recorded prior to May one knows.
***About the release of these audio tracks***
Tracks 2 & 3 first appeared on CD in 1993 on “Hit The Rainbow“. This was an unofficial release and most likely they were remastered and/or remixed by amateurs and professionals that were not authorized by the band and their owners.
Then in 2012 all tracks (including track 1 as well) appeared on the CD “Long live rock ’n’ roll“ (which was a re-release in Europe on November 13, 2012 as “Long live Rock’n’Roll“ with bonus tracks). This was the so called “deluxe version“ or “deluxe edition“ of “Long live Rock’n’Roll“ album.
In 2014, on the compilation box “A light in the black“, tracks 2 and 3 were re-released and remastered once again.
This is all the information you needed. Please refrain from recreating and reinventing the history. The history is only one and you have one chance through it: to be true to yourself.
