Germany Takes Over Uniper. Finland is Not Happy

Germany is taking over its largest importer of natural gas – Uniper, as the energy giant stands at the brink of bankruptcy. To save Uniper, Germany is about to spend a large amount of money. And it is upsetting Finland while at it. In July, Germany had agreed to a 15-billion-euro bailout package for Uniper in exchange for a 30% stake in the company. However, that bailout ended in ruin, as the German energy industry continues to face an unprecedented crisis which threatens to obliterate it altogether. So, Berlin has now moved to take over the entire company, and is willing to spend 8 billion euros more in that endeavour. Keeping Uniper afloat, therefore, has already cost the German exchequer two capital injections worth over $23 billion.
