Boney M was founded by German producer Frank Farian in 1975 and consisted of four originally Caribbean artists from England, Germany and the Netherlands: singers Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell, model Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell. Boney M. is known for the mix of white and black music; the producer is white and the singers are black. In addition, many songs have a black (emancipatory) background. The group owes its -name to the main character Napoleon ’Boney’ Bonaparte from the Australian detective series Boney (1971-1972) of which the founder Farian was a big fan. ’Rivers Of Babylon’ was Boney M’s biggest hit: it was no. 1 in nearly every country in Europe, includung the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium,France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland as well as New Zeland and Australia. in the USA it reached no. 30. ’I’m Born Again’ was a no 11 hit in the Netherlands in December 1979.
