World’s First RAM Chip

Dr. Bernard Widrow shows us his Memory Plane, he and his colleagues at MIT developed the first Random Access Memory in 1951-1953. The magnetic core memory plane technology was bought by IBM and first used in the IBM 701 mainframe. Widrow shows us the toroidal magnets, each one equal to one bit. These cards were stacked and used in the Whirlwind Computer.
